Configuring DHCP in SBS

SBS asks you to install DHCP as part of the setup. You might not to - maybe you weren't ready to remove DHCP from an existing server or network device. When you finally do want to install DHCP on SBS, follow these steps:

  1. Take note of the existing DHCP configuration:
    1. IP address scope
    2. Reservations
    3. Exclusions
    4. Default router (gateway)
    5. DNS servers
    6. WINS servers (if required)
  2. Disable DHCP on the existing server or network device
  3. Install DHCP on SBS by going to Add/Remove programs and then Windows Components (click on Network and then Details)
  4. In the DHCP manager (found in Administrative Tools) create a new scope:
    1. Name: SBS
    2. Description: Local SBS network
  5. Enter the starting and ending IP addresses for the scope
  6. Enter any exclusions
  7. On the "Configure DHCP Options" page, choose "No, I will configure these options later" - you will let the SBS wizards do the configuration
  8. Right click on the scope and choose "Activate"
  9. Run the "Connect to the Internet" wizard from the Server Management console to complete the configuration of SBS
