Service Packs and Updates for SBS 2003

Updating to SP1
Edit section

For SBS you need to install the following patches in the following order to upgrade to SP1:

  1. Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
  2. Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
  3. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
  4. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
  5. Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1

There are also ISA and SQL updates where you are using premium version. Two very good articles can be found at:

The latter is the more detailed article but requires a free membership to view. It includes "known issue" with the updates as well as specific issues with some Dell & HP servers.

Once complete you should add all current Windows updates/patches.

If you fail to install SBS 2003 SP1 in addition to Windows Server 2003 SP1, you will have problems as defined in KB897342.

There is also a known issue that if you have not installed Service Pack 1, the W32Time service will be disabled when you run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard, selecting your Connection Type as "A Router with an IP Address".  If you select "A direct connection..." instead, and still specify your router's IP it won't kill the Time Service. Better to just install SBS SP1.

Updating from SBS SP1 to R2
Edit section

  1. Install SBS Incl SP1 from the cd
  2. Install your premium tech, ie SQL.
  3. Configure your system
  4. Then install insert the R2 Tech cd,
  5. Exchange sp2 and sharepoint sp2 are prerequisites before installing R2 and are contained on the cd.
  6. Then install your additional service packs.

If it has come preinstalled with R2 then exchange sp2 and sharepoint sp2 should be already installed, so you should be fine with installing the sql service pack as it is.

and the other service packs for that matter, I would personally patch the sql and sharepoint first, backup then do the sp2 install.

"It must be noted that Windows Small Business Server is technically not an 'edition' of the Windows Server operating system but rather a customized SKU of server technologies targeted especially to small businesses. As such, the application servers are not merely bundled with the OS but are tightly integrated into the operating system. The same service packs as those for Windows Server or other server products cannot simply be used to update the OS."

It must be noted that this is no longer true.  One can install Windows 2003 sp2 to SBS 2003.  Since the R2 era (meaning post SBS 2003 sp1) the goal has been to not have special service packs for SBS, but rather be able to install the same exact service packs as Windows Server, Exchange Server, Sharepoint, WSUS, ISA and so on.

So let me restate that:

The SAME service packs as those for Windows Server or other server products CAN simply be used to update the Operating system.

SBS is just parts with extra magic.

Service Packs to Install Post-R2:

  1. Exchange 2003 SP2
  2. MSDE 2000 SP4
  3. WSS 2.0 SP3
