- McAfee Stinger - quickly check for ~50 viruses
- Trend Damage Cleanup Engine - no installation required, can be run from a USB drive, and is free. Recommend to run this after Stinger, as it uses a full virus and spyware signature and is much more thorough
- Hijackthis - also see www.hijackthis.de/en to help analyse the log file (this page also has download link for Hijackthis)
- Try a System Restore - this might be the quickest and easiest fix
- Install Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy
- Reboot into Safe Mode
- Check Add/Remove Programs - uninstall anything dodgy
- Do a complete scan with Ad-Aware and then Spybot
- Check autoruns
- include empty locations
- verify code signatures
- hide Microsoft entries - Remove all previous restore points
